For this episode of “We Review the Reviews,” Jen is on Vacation, so it’s just AJ and Tara.

Since this is a brand new book, there aren’t as many reviews as with a book that’s a bit older, but we still found some “doozies.”

Among those are:

  • Oh too predictable and Eve is one-dimensional
  • Love scenes are terrible and why doesn’t Eve ever have cramps
  • Story is thin and trite
  • Antagonists are kind of stupid

We have someone who starts out their review saying, “How I hate reading J.D. Robb.” and ends with: “Why do I read the Eve Dallas books? Because there is another writer whose name I can never remember whose protagonist is also police and whose name is Eve? Dee?” We wish this person would just figure out who that other author is and go read them.

Also, that person who says they’re “disappointed with Eve and Roarke’s relationship” because it’s “not going anywhere,” which we think is just code for “Babies.”

And, of course, we also have the person suggesting that maybe there’s a ghostwriter.

BUT…

“Bob” gave the book a 4 Star rating and says “Dallas’s investigation is clean and focused. There are no sidetrack plot developments that take her out of the investigation.”

Someone who said: “No grand fireworks in this one, but that didn’t stop me from turning the pages as fast as I could read them. I was hooked; I needed to know ‘whodunnit’.”

A really lovely review from someone who said: “Strong characters and relationships, unique plot lines and tight pacing make this a must read series for fans of crime and police procedurals. I highly recommend Payback In Death to fans of the In Death series and to everyone who enjoys a challenging mystery and police procedural.”

You knew we had to have one positive Susan Ericksen review with the reviewer saying, “But the combination of JD Robb’s writing and Susan Ericksen’s narration have kept me sane in February and September for almost thirty years now. That deserves 5 stars unless she does something egregious.”

And we end with a reviewer who thanks Nora for enriching her life for so many years.

We agree!
