Family, Ties and Murder - We Review "Thankless in Death"

Hey everyone, welcome back to Podcast in Death! This week, we dove into “Thankless in Death,” and boy, it’s a wild one. This is not a favorite among listeners, and we can understand that because this book has one of the worst murderers. BUT, there were a lot of really good non-case-related things like the medal ceremony and Thanksgiving with Roarke’s family.

We jump into the storyline, discussing how Gerald Reinhold, the book’s killer, is one of the worst we’ve encountered. He starts his spree by brutally killing his parents, and we all agreed he’s a creepy motherfucker. As the story unfolds, we see Eve juggling her work with the looming Thanksgiving festivities, which includes Roarke’s family and even little Nixie, who brings up a lot of emotions for Eve.

This book is also the start of the “Jenkinson’s Ties” gag, that has become such a fan favorite gag from the series.

There’s a lot of legwork in this book as Eve and Peabody track down Jerry’s movements. Jerry, thinking he’s some big shot, changes his appearance and even tries to act sophisticated by ordering whiskey at a bar, only to end up hating it. We had a good laugh at his expense because, seriously, what a dumbass.

The medal ceremony was a touching moment. Eve and Roarke both receive medals of honor, and the scene with Nixie afterward was so heartwarming. Nixie’s thank-you letter to Eve had us all tearing up. It’s moments like these that remind us why we love this series so much, despite the grim subject matter.

We wrapped up by giving a shoutout to some standout characters, especially Mrs. Farnsworth, who cleverly tricked Jerry and flagged his fake ID to alert Eve. That woman was a total badass!
