Murdering Morphing Dollies: We Review "Obsession in Death"

This week, we review the book that many feel is an homage to Nora’s often obsessed fan base. The murderer this book is an obsessive fan of Eve’s that leaves her notes written on the walls of the crime scenes and signed with: Your True Friend. Eve discovers that she has a lot of really creepy obsessive fans and she’s a bit rattled by that.

The theme is “Respect,” and according to Lottie, Eve doesn’t get enough from some people, including Leanore Bastwick, a lawyer that Eve went up against in “Rapture in Death,” Ledo, a drug dealer who accidentally hit Eve with a pool stick in “Conspiracy in Death,” and Dirk Hastings, who we first saw in “Portrait in Death.” We’re especially happy to see Dirk Hastings again (and happy he didn’t die due to his girlfriend hurling a bottle of Pinot Noir at the killer. Despite his nasty disposition and gutter mouth, we love Dirk Hastings and are glad that we get to spend a “Lovely Time” with him.

Close calls for both Nadine (in her kitty print pajamas) and Jamie (who, apparently, knows how to take care of himself and impresses Roarke with his “crystal clear” video of the killer.) We get to see an angry Dr. Mira. We also catch up a bit with Morris and how his Christmas went.

Eve does a very kind thing for one of the witnesses, and asks Roarke find the girl a place at Dochas.

Not much going on with Eve and Roarke with this book, but we do get our first glimpse of Summerset’s girlfriend, Ivana Liski. We spend some time with Mavis, Leonardo and Bella (who tries to eat The Giant’s Tear) and learned to say “shit” from Dallas.

There’s a very funny scene where McNab shows Eve the program that he and Yancy came up with that can show 3D images of the suspect…and in every one the suspect is wearing a skimpy bikini. He and Peabody brainstorm a game based on this program and call it “Murdering Morphing Dollies.” Roarke is immediately on board.

A really great moment at the end of the book when, while in the middle of a standoff with Lottie in the middle of her bullpen, Eve gets a call from Roarke and tips him off to the danger without Lottie knowing by calling Roarke “Sweetheart” and “Baby” and telling him how much she’s looking forward to the ball drop in Times Square.

Overall, a really solid book with some really great scenes and dialogue.
