Lieutenant, You’re a Hell of a Cop – Opening Lines and Closing Lines

Episode 231: Put Down the Books & Walk Away Slowly
Podcast in Death
In this episode of Podcast in Death, we are reviewing “Indulgence in Death”! Of the three of us, only Jen has read this book more than once. AJ and Tara only read it once when it first came out, and never read it again. BUT…as with many of the books in this series that we have read so far, we all found that we really liked and appreciated this book so much more on a second (for Jen: third? fourth? fifth?) read.
Of course the beginning of this book goes down in “In Death” history as being one of the best written openings of any book of the series. Eve and Roarke are on their second anniversary trip and they decide to stop by Ireland and spend a few days with Roarke’s family. There are a lot of unexpected cock jokes, and the thought of Roarke driving a tractor, which we all just love. Eve gives Roarke his anniversary gift here because it is a brand new playground dedicated to the memory of Roarke’s mother. Brian Kelly makes an appearance, and Roarke’s cousin Shawn finds a dead body. Eve helps teach both Shawn and the rookie cop that is called out to the murder how to properly investigate the murder and give justice to the victim.
Back home in New York, Eve catches an unusual case where a limo driver was killed by a crossbow. Shortly after, a high-end licensed companion is murdered with a bayonet. Eve quickly surmises that the two murders are connected. Both link to two rich bored scumballs killing people they had a grudge against as some kind of weird competition. It is in some ways a lot like “Seduction in Death,” but in most ways not.
We love the scene where Roarke purposely sets up a golf game with one of his clients, David Su, who is amazing here, just so that he can get the bad guys to play against him. The “rich bros” try to cheat with radio controlled balls, then Roarke uses his own device to manipulate their balls, so that he and Su win the game, which gives Roarke a lot of satisfaction but really pisses off the bad guys. Lots of jokes about manipulated balls in this episode.
Overall, another great addition to the series.
